Lighting in the bathroom

Whether you are getting ready in the morning, taking a relaxing shower or visiting the bathroom at night, the right lighting can make all the difference. Depending on where the lighting is installed, there are different factors to consider. To help you choose the right lighting, we have put together our best tips for bathroom lighting.

Lighting in the bathroom

Placement of lamps in the bathroom

Before installing lighting in the bathroom, it is important to understand the bathroom zones. Because of the high levels of moisture and humidity, the type of lighting and where it can be installed are determined by these zones.

In most countries, bathrooms are divided into three zones: zone 0, zone 1 and zone 2.

Please note that regulations vary by country. Always follow local electrical installation regulations.

Bathroom zones

Zone 0:
Covers the inside of the bathtub or shower basin. Only lights designed for complete submersion in water may be installed in this zone. Nordlux does not offer lights suitable for zone 0 (IP68).

Zone 1:
Extends from the edge of zone 0 up to a height of 2.25 m. If there is no bathtub or shower basin, zone 1 extends within a radius of 60 cm from the shower head. Lights installed in zone 1 must have a minimum IP rating of IP65.

Zone 2:
Starts 60 cm from the shower head or the edge of the bathtub or shower basin and extends up to a height of 2.25 m. Lights installed in zone 2 must have a minimum IP rating of IP44. For extra protection, IP65 is recommended.

Outside these zones (previously known as zone 3):
Lights with an IP rating of IP20 or higher may be installed.

Ceiling light for the bathroom

Installing recessed spotlights in the ceiling provides even lighting throughout the bathroom. It is a good idea to place spotlights above the mirror to reduce shadows and create bright, practical lighting.

If recessed spotlights are not the right solution, ceiling lights or wall lights are great alternatives. Just make sure they have the appropriate IP rating for the bathroom zone in which they are installed and comply with local regulations.

Lighting up your shower area

Lighting in the shower area should be both functional and relaxing. If the shower has a fixed shower head, avoid installing recessed spotlights directly above it, as the shower head can block some of the light and create shadows.

Installing concealed LED spotlights in the ceiling provides soft, even lighting and creates a natural daylight effect.

When choosing lighting for the shower area, always select products with an IP rating that meets the requirements for the bathroom zone in which they are installed. Always follow local electrical installation regulations.

Lighting for the bathroom mirror

The right lighting around the bathroom mirror is just as important as the general lighting in the room. Placing a light above or on either side of the mirror helps reduce shadows on the face, making everyday tasks such as applying makeup, shaving or brushing your teeth easier.

Lights installed above the sink should be placed at least 60 cm from the tap. They should also be positioned so they cannot come into contact with water from the shower. There should therefore be a minimum distance of 60 cm between the light and the edge of the bathtub or shower enclosure. If the sink is located in zone 2, the lights must meet the requirements for that zone (minimum IP44).

Create the perfect lighting for day and night

The right lighting can make everyday routines more comfortable, whether getting ready in the morning or visiting the bathroom at night. With dimmable lighting, you can easily adjust the brightness to suit the time of day and create the right atmosphere.

In addition to traditional wall dimmers, selected Nordlux lights feature Moodmaker™, allowing you to adjust the lighting using the regular wall switch. No additional dimmer is required.

Moodmaker™

Moodmaker™ is a built-in dimming function that lets you adjust the lighting directly using the light switch. Depending on the product, you can change the brightness, the colour temperature or both in several steps, making it easy to create the perfect lighting for any time of day.
