Lighting serves an important purpose in our everyday life. Therefore, when you are choosing light, you will need to ask yourself the question, what will the room or area be used for and understand the function of each room. In this way you can understand the space and provide the best lighting for each room.

There are three key types of light that should be considered when choosing lighting.
1. Ambient lighting – This provides the overall illumination within the room and is normally the starting point when choosing lighting for your space. Ambient lighting can come in many forms including recessed downlights, pendant lights and ceiling light. The chosen light source will rely on the type and use of the room.
2. Task Lighting – This type of light provides increased light for specific tasks such as reading, studying or general function. It is more for practicality rather than decorative however it can be both! Task lighting is usually dotted around the house in the form of table lamps, floor lamps, undercabinet lights and outdoor garden lights.
3. Accent Lighting – is for when you need to create extra drama and character in a room. Applying accent lighting should draw your attention to particular objects within the space.
1. To create atmosphere in the desired room you should consider dimmable lights to create contrasting areas of light and dark
2. With a dimmer, you have a much greater ability to customise your lamps and lighting for various everyday tasks and moods. For example, full brightness can be convenient for cleaning in the children’s bedroom, while at bedtime there is a need for a soft and relaxing light.

3. It is also possible to dim lights without using a dimmer. MoodMakerTM works with your regular electrical outlet, and installing a dimmer is therefore not necessary. This is a simple and easy way to create a desired atmosphere without using a dimmer. Our MoodMakerTM range consists of ceiling lamps, downlights and surface-mounted spots.

1. The design of the room, from furniture layout to surfaces and mirrors can also determine how to light will appear and should be considered when creating functional lighting.
2. Take note of the direction of the light beam, consider using wall and floor lamps to draw attention to particular features in your room such as a picture on the wall. Many of our lights can be angled in various directions to achieve this look.
3. Brighten up a dark corner with a pendant that emits light either through the shade or at a 360-degree angle.
4. If a room has a key function such as the kitchen you need a good working light. Consider narrow lamps to avoid glare whilst cooking.
5. Remember the three different types of lighting; ambient, task and accent lighting.
